Vandalism in Sharlands Road area

Hi everyone,
Over the last few months there has been a lot of vandalism carried out in the Sharlands Road area. This has consisted of damage to the mountain bike trails by motorcyclists riding on them, then the portaloo that was on the corner of Bobs Fern Road, for the Corrections Crew who are building our new trail, was pushed over the bank and in to the stream. We had to get a crane in to lift it out. The public toilet at the Kaka/ Sharlands Road carpark has had a big hole smashed in the side of it. Then recently a number of the decking boards on the little bridge near the end of R & R were smashed out. This took quite some effort as these boards were 150mm x 50mm. Two large rocks were used to bust them through. An attempt was made to shove the trailer & portaloo over the bank and when that failed they smashed the trailers tail-lights. And now we have had the portaloo on the trailer pushed down over the bank again. They were successful second time round. This costs us time and money as we have to get the portaloo serviced due to the contents being spread around the inside of the toilet. We need the portaloo for the Corrections crew and it is no mean feat retrieving it from down the bank.
We would like to ask you keep an eye out for the idiots who are doing these things. Any info that may help us find these people would be appreciated. If you see anything suspicious or any dangerous activity in Hancock Forests, please call the Forest Managers (AFM) on 5448541, or after hours our AFM liaison Jim Hamilton directly on 021 547921.
Cheers, Juddy

Goat Cull, Kaka Hill, Sharlands Creek

AFM have employed a professional hunter to sort out the goat problem in the Kaka Hill area. This work will be done during the week, but may also take place during weekends. This activity will continue until the goat population is at a manageable level, and may take a couple of months depending on strike rate.

Signage used to indicate hunting is happening includes yellow warning tape placed across roads and tracks, and signage explaining what is going on.

If this signage is out please take notice of it - and don't cross any yellow warning tape across access points. This is especially important for riders who use Kaka Rd to access the DOC Sharlands Bush area; and any key access for downhill riders will also be managed in line with the hunting schedule.

Results 6 Hour Breakout

Despite the damp and muddy conditions there were plenty of smiles at the end of today's 6 Hour Mid-winter Breakout at Rabbit Island. 340 riders took part in the event and 123 teams were on the start line. Hats off to Emmett Mills for organising the event and to all the helpers, especially Dennis Bartlett and Diane Marshall who recorded all 1211 lap times.
Joel MacMillan was first solo man by 1 lap and 3 minutes ahead of Tom Ashley. The solo women's title was a close battle between Claire Thurlow and Liz Rogers, with Claire winning out by only 2 minutes.
Village Cycles men's team of Sean Hambrook, Tom Filmer, Layton Murdoch and Daniel Ellison were first by 23 minutes ahead of R+R Sport.
Susie Wood and Eloise Fry were clear winners of the women's grade despite Eloise taking time out to attend to an injured rider whilst Golden Bay Glass showed class in the mixed grade 10 minutes ahead of Mike an' Hotties.
Fastest lap time was set by Dean Fulton in 21m26s only 1 second ahead of Murray Sheridan and 8 seconds ahead of Sean Hambrook.

Update on Canaan Tracks

This item from the Golden Bay MTB Club website: http://baymtb.blogspot.com/
May 19th.
We've just finished marking out the last part of the Canaan main loop.  The final 2km of the main loop will by-pass the road and come out of the bush into the Harwoods Hole Car Park. There will also be an option to ride the Gold Creek loop back to the Car Park too, signaling the end to riding the downhill dirt road into the Car Park. It promises to be a 'Rollercoaster' ride with awesome views looking across the bush to Harwoods Hole, taking in classic Canaan geography, natural berms, and the odd rock squeeze.
It will be completely in keeping with the rest of the main loop, and we already know this section will become the icing on the cake to what is already  a classic XC course.

Doc have started a big fencing project in the area set aside for the finish of the main Canaan loop. We liaised with them to line up the sheep stop for the bikes to continue unimpeded.  Yet to be dug in to place, but otherwise ready to go.  The last bit of bush where the track goes is awesome too. This is the last section of the Canaan tracks to be funded, if you thought it was good this summer, just you wait.......!

Map and photos of Canaan tracks here.
